Find Your ProtocolDHT drops fast, but hair is slow. Here’s the usual order:
Everyone’s hair is different, and no medication guarantees regrowth.
Yes, some men do. As DHT drops, follicles that were stuck in a weak cycle can reset, and the old thin hairs fall out before stronger ones grow in. It usually settles within a few months. If you’re also starting oral minoxidil, a shed in the first couple of months is even more common.
In a 917-man trial, 0.5mg dutasteride grew more hair than finasteride 1mg over 24 weeks (Gubelin Harcha et al., J Am Acad Dermatol, 2014). In a dose trial, 2.5mg dutasteride produced more hair growth than finasteride 5mg at 12 and 24 weeks (Olsen et al., J Am Acad Dermatol, 2006). The full evidence →
Take photos on day one, then once a month: same room, same lighting, same angles (front hairline, temples, top and crown), with dry hair. Hair changes too slowly to judge in the mirror, so the photos are your proof.
Give it a full 6 months before judging, and take it every day. Missed doses matter more than anything else. If you’re still losing ground after a full cycle, your physician can review a higher dose or adding oral minoxidil. When to step up →
Dutasteride stops the cause, DHT. Minoxidil helps hair grow. Many men use both: dutasteride to hold the line and minoxidil to push regrowth. Your physician decides what fits you. Minoxidil questions →
As long as you want the results. Male pattern hair loss is driven by DHT for life, and dutasteride only works while you take it. If you stop, DHT comes back within months, and so does the hair loss.
Many men do, and many surgeons recommend it. A transplant moves hair, but it doesn’t stop DHT from thinning the native hair around the grafts. Talk to your surgeon about timing. Transplant questions →
As early as you notice it. Hair you still have is far easier to keep than hair you’ve lost is to regrow, so men who start at the first sign of thinning usually do best. Dutasteride One™ →
