Topical Or
Oral?
Is a topical safer than a pill?

Not automatically. A topical usually puts less medication in your blood, but DHT blockers applied to the scalp still get absorbed into the body, so side effects are still possible. If side effects are what’s holding you back, look at the real numbers first. Dutasteride side effects →

Which works better?

Oral dutasteride has the strongest evidence, from large trials against finasteride. Topical dutasteride is newer, with much less research behind it. For minoxidil, oral often works better than topical, because some men barely have the scalp enzyme that activates topical minoxidil. Is oral minoxidil safe? →

Why do so many men choose a topical?

Mostly fear of side effects from pills. That’s understandable, and a lot of what’s online is scare stories. Most men on low-dose oral treatment don’t have side effects, and a physician reviews your history before prescribing anything.

Why does consistency matter so much?

Hair loss medication only works while you take it, every day. A pill takes seconds. A topical has to be applied to a dry scalp, usually at night, and left on. Missed applications add up, and consistency matters more than almost anything else.

Spray, foam or solution: does it matter?

Whatever the form, it has to reach your scalp, not just your hair. Part your hair, apply it directly to the thinning areas, and rub it in. Spraying it over the top of your hair wastes most of it. Some liquid formulas contain propylene glycol, which irritates some men’s scalps; tell your physician if you get itching or flaking.

What about caffeine and other added ingredients?

Some have a small study or two (a 0.2% caffeine liquid did reasonably well against 5% minoxidil in one trial), but none of them lower DHT, the cause of male pattern hair loss. Check the label, and make sure the formula is built around the medications with the strongest evidence. The No-BS Zone →
